Podcast Episode 25

Here we are on our 25th episode and on Black Friday. We hope that our listeners were able to get what they wanted and were not injured in any of the multitude of skirmishes that occurred over the course of the day. We need all the listeners we can get. There were quite a few incidents that occurred today with a stun gun topping the list. There was also a gunman who was stabbed over a parking space.

We are all over the place today. If you haven't checked on the deals for PC gaming you should. Amazon is selling all three Bioshock games as a bundle for $15. Rhett goes off on the Playstation 3 controller and how inadequate it is. We read some of Chance's comments (Thanks). We discuss the romanticizing of the Native Americans and how murky history can be. If history was clear cut we wouldn't need historians.

Jason talks about Gravity Falls, a cartoon from the Disney Channel. Most of the Disney Channel offerings are pretty poor for the most part. However, every once in a while Disney Channel puts out something that is really good; Phineas and Ferb and Gravity Falls are in this category. Of course, talking about Gravity Falls leads us to talking about the SyFy show Eureka, also a great show. Unfortunately, Eureka was cancelled before its time and had its own issues, but check it out.

Jason also recommends boycotting Black Friday next year. Do something with your family instead and stick it to the retailers who are trying to manipulate us into spending the money we don't have.

Tonight we advance past our halfway point with Zatanna versus Doomsday. We have a hard time with this one we like Zatanna and we don't like Doomsday. Doomsday was just a way for DC to put together a villain who could defeat Superman, only in the end he couldn't. On the episode tonight, we are up to 24. Rhett is still saving his scathing critique of Harry Potter for another episode. We may have it as a special topic for episode 25.

Tonight we respond to our backlog of fan email. We wish we had more. Last week due to scheduling we didn't get to our fan emails so we take care of them all tonight. We also criticize the Xbox One that just came out. We are profoundly disturbed by the fact that the Xbox can spy on us with such ease and that the level of outrage at such a prospect is depressingly low. In addition, the Xbox One is touted as a multimedia system. We feel that this is all well and good, but we don't buy consoles for their multimedia capabilities. We buy them to game. We may get an Xbox One in the future, but our choice for now is the cheaper, more powerful Playstation 4.

We then talk about some nostalgia from Jason's childhood. He grew up reading the comics in the newspaper. Particular favorites of his were The Far Side by Gary Larsen, Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson, and Peanuts by Charles Schulz. The Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes both ended the same year. Unfortunately we lost two of the greatest comics that year. Lio is a bright spot in comics at the moment. This particular strip puts me in mind of the humor in The Far Side.

In our Battle Royale tonight we finally get to the halfway point in our tournament. We have Lobo versus Solomon Grundy. Lobo is a bad boy, intergalactic bounty hunter who can stand up to Superman, and a practically mindless zombie (yes, somewhat redundant) that cannot die. We are back with episode 23. Yes it is a little late, however, we will be doing another episode on Friday so don't worry. On this episode we talk about the console war that is heating up with the launch of the Playstation 4 and the Friday launch of Xbox One. We just aren't that excited. Also, the first casualty of the console war, someone was killed over the Playstation 4. This is a sad day for gamers everywhere. I don't know about anyone else but we gamers already have a bad image, we shouldn't let it get worse.

From there, we move to television series that ended poorly and characters that were written out poorly. Specifically we talk about the series Forever Knight and MASH. Forever Knight ends poorly for example and MASH dealt poorly with the departure of McLean Stevenson. For contrast we bring up Cowboy Bebop and Remington Steele as examples of series that ended well.

Rhett then lets us know how he feels about the Assassin's Creed series. Basically it sucks. To be more specific he cites its convoluted storyline, game play that is too simple, and the ennobling of murderers and thieves. Assassins and pirates as good guys, does any else have a problem with this situation.

Finally, we have our next Battle Royale in our tournament. Tonight we pit Booster Gold against Hal Jordan Green Lantern. We drag out the fight quite a bit, mostly to mess with Chance. We open our podcast tonight responding to some fan emails. To be fair Rhett reads three fan emails, but they are all from Chance, our #1 fan. Thanks for the emails Chance, keep them coming. After responding to his comments about Plastic Man beating Iron Man, David Cage's games, etc. Jason brings up Peter Jackson's the Hobbit and why he was disappointed. Rhett joins in and we spend the entirety of the episode on this topic, not that Rhett didn't have his own topic, but Peter Jackson could have done much better. Jason recalls that Tolkien scholars were credited in the movie and admits that he would probably have been fired for arguing with the director, had that been his job. Rhett speculates that the reason for three movies instead of one or two is down to the greed of those involved. Jason thinks that Tolkien is rolling in his grave at the travesty that his work has become. If you have doubts and think that Peter Jackson is a genius, read this article from his son, Christopher. Finally we wrap things up with tonights Battle Royale in our Legendary Battle of the Legendary Legends. We pit the Amazing Spider-man against the Amazon Warrior, Wonder Woman. On tonight's post-Halloween episode you will hear how the US military is secretly developing combat armor for our soldiers. This armor is cost prohibitive at the moment, so it is only available to special forces. The armor looks very much like that worn by Master Chief and was report by the state news agency in China. Rhett clarifies his position on Beyond Two Souls, good story, good acting, not a good game. Jason goes off on Halloween and several things vaguely related to this time of year. Rhett then gives brief reviews of Battlefield 4 and Batman: Arkham Orgins. Last, but not least, our next bout in the Battle of the Legendary Legends: Iron Man fights Plastic Man. Rhett and Jason give their take and try to be fair about it, but they feel that the fight is pretty one sided.
